The verdict is in: 14th Street busway has been a resounding success!
- Bus speeds are up over 30%
- Weekday ridership is up 17% (up to 31,000)
- Weekend ridership up over 30%
- No significant impact on traffic on local roads
We now have further and incontrovertible proof of what we already knew: when highly inefficient cars aren’t blocking the way, transit works so much better for the vast majority of New Yorkers who rely on it.
As New York City’s subways continue to struggle, as we lead the fight against climate change, and as we push for zero deaths on our streets from traffic violence, New York City needs to dramatically expand busways so more people can benefit.
With the overwhelming success of the 14th Street Busway pilot, the city must seize this moment to demand more for the 2.4 million bus riders across New York City who would benefit from the rollout of busways in their neighborhoods.
Now that the 14th Street busway has been implemented, New Yorkers have seen how much bus service improves when there is space dedicated exclusively to their movement.
With this demonstrated success, the city must seize this moment to demand more for the 2.4 million bus riders across New York City who would benefit from the rollout of busways in their neighborhoods.
The time where bus riders came last must end.
We are calling on you to come to the aid of New York City’s 2.4 million bus riders who suffer from the worst service, and slowest speeds in the United States.
We need more busways, and your leadership is necessary to make it happen.
