14th Street PeopleWay: A New Way Across Manhattan

The upcoming 2019 L train shutdown will remove a vital link from New York City's transportation network. Hundreds of thousands of people that count on the L train will be forced to find other options. While the repairs are unavoidable, here is what we can add to the corridor to improve transit for everyone:

  • Exclusive 24-hour bus lanes, free fares for all riders, and signal priority of Select Bus Service (SBS) can help buses operate at nearly the capacity of the L train.
  • ADA-Accessibility components such as Curb-Level bus-boarding will bring riders of all needs on board, both equitably and conveniently.
  • Two-way, Protected Bike Lanes on 13th Street and an additional Twenty added feet of wider sidewalks on 14th Street will ease congestion on buses, increase safety, and improve quality of life.

We urge you, our community boards, to work with the Department of Transportation (DOT) to make 14th Street a world class transit corridor serving all New Yorkers to the greatest capacity.

This petition will be delivered to
NYC Council Speaker Johnson, Council Members Powers, Rivera, & Chin; NYS State Senators Hoylman & Kavanagh; Assemblymembers Glick & Gottfried; Congresspersons Maloney, Velasquez & Nadler; Manhattan Borough President Brewer; Community Boards 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6
With the upcoming shutdown of the L train will remove a vital link from the city's transportation network. This will make it much more difficult for people who rely on transit to get across town in Manhattan as well as getting to and from Brooklyn. The hundreds of thousands of people that count on the L train will be forced to find other options, and many of them will be turning to surface transportation.

While the repairs are unavoidable, there is much we can do to minimize the inconvenience for everyone. By dedicating 14th St to public transit, walking, and biking, we can maximize the usefulness of our limited street space and increase safety along this very busy corridor. We call on you to make sure the NYC Transit plans include:

(1) Exclusive 24-hour bus lanes, free fares for all riders, and signal priority of Select Bus Service (SBS) can help buses operate at nearly the capacity of the L train; (2) ADA-Accessibility components such as Curb-Level bus-boarding will bring riders of all needs on board, both equitably and conveniently; and finally (3) Two-way, Protected Bike Lanes on 13th Street and an additional Twenty added feet of wider sidewalks on 14th Street that will ease congestion on buses, increase safety, and improve quality of life for everyone.

The dedicated bus lanes, off board fare payment and signal priority of SBS can help buses operate close to the capacity of the L train. Bike lanes and additional pedestrian space can ease congestion on the shuttle buses and make everyone safer. We urge you, our community boards, to work with the DOT to make 14th St a world class transit corridor that serves everyone in the city to the greatest capacity.
